Gibson Pewter Shop News - January-February 2013

Greetings from Hillsborough Center!

We had an amazing December at Gibson Pewter! In fact, it was our best Holiday Season ever. So thanks to all of you, our loyal patrons who help to keep this small family business alive and well!

Speaking of firsts. 2012 marks the first time that we have sold out of our Annual Christmas Ornaments, the Pewter Snowflakes. We cast more in January for those who are still interested and we’re also busy designing new ornaments for 2013. Stay tuned!

What’s new

A while back, a good friend asked me to make him a Tulip Form Pint Tankard. Like an 18th century pewterer, I mixed and matched parts from other pieces, and was able to come up with a handsome design without making costly new molds and chucks. I posted pictures of the tankard on the Web and the overwhelming response was positive. So they are now a production item.

The Sonoma Goblet is a beautiful new piece which incorporates the cup from the Leddell Chalice and the taller version of the Stem Goblet base. Here again, I’ve used existing forms and molds to come up with a new design. The Sonoma Goblet has wonderful lines and feels great in the hand. A pair of these would be a wonderful gift!

Before Christmas 2012, a good customer asked me to make a 1.5 Ounce Jigger. Thinking this might be a good seller, I agreed to the project. Sales of these have been off the charts! So we’ve made new chucks and decided to go into production in 2013. Each Jigger has Five incised lines; two near the lip, two near the base and one on the top interior at the 1.5 oz. level. Made with extra heavy gauge metal to stand the test of time!

Antique of The Month

Up for sale is a wonderful antique American Heart Handle Porringer. To date, no maker has been assigned with certainty to these 19th century porringers. Some have an "R" cast on the underside of the handle leading some to speculate that R. Lee, or R. Gleason might be the maker. The jury is still out. This example is in fine condition and has great turning lines on the base as well as a strong linen mark on the inside of the bowl.

We hope to hear from all of you again this year and remember the pewter shop is warm and cozy in the winter months so plan a visit soon!
